Gold is the main currency in the World of Warcraft. Of course you also have copper and silver but these amounts do not play an important role in general. Questing

Quests play an important role in the World of Warcraft. First of all they are the quickest way of leveling because they give nice amounts of experience. While you level up you will notice that quests also give nice rewards in both the form of items and gold. Once you hit the level cap you will no longer receive experience through the quests because you can’t get experience past the level cap. You will instead gain a nice additional amount of gold. There are a lot of quests in Azeroth and in the Outlands and the same goes for Northrend which is the area where you will be leveling and questing till 80, and receive 14 gold per quest once you hit level 80. Most of the quests however can only be completed once and even though each area has around 100 quests you will run out of regular quests to do at some point. Luckily there are also quite a few daily quests. Daily quests can be completed once per day. They reset at 03:00 at night so you can do them again the next day. These quests usually also give reputation with some faction so you can gain your profit here in multiple ways.

All together this can be a lucrative business.
